3 New Technologies in Total Knee Replacement

New technologies for knee surgery

Knee pain is a common problem that can limit your ability to do the things you enjoy most.

Whether from a lifetime of active living or previous orthopaedic trauma, it's not uncommon for our knees to give way to osteoarthritis. A knee replacement may be recommended when the painful symptoms no longer respond to conservative treatment.

If you're considering knee replacement surgery, Dr. Cafferky has multiple options to get you back to doing the activities you love - leveraging Zimmer Biomet's innovations in implants, robotic systems, and data technologies. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at some of the latest advances in knee replacement surgery.

Persona IQ® - Smart Knee Replacement

Knee Implant

Dr. Cafferky and his team are now offering Persona IQ, a cutting-edge smart knee implant that the FDA has approved for total knee replacement surgery.

With this new technology, Dr. Cafferky can remotely monitor a patient's progress using data collected from the smart knee implant. This allows patients to feel confident that everything is being done to ensure a successful recovery and stay connected with their healthcare team every step of the way.

How does Persona IQ work?

  1. Because everyone's knees are different, Dr. Cafferky will start by tailoring the implant to best match your knee anatomy.

  2. A small "smart" stem extension is attached to the bottom of the implant. This stem contains sensors that capture information like your range of motion, stride length, walking speed, and step count.

  3. Data about your activity levels and progress is automatically supplied to your surgeon to help them determine the need for different directions or follow-up care.

mymobility®

When faced with knee surgery, many patients feel overwhelmed by the prospect of the procedure and the recovery process. A clear understanding of what to expect can help ease some of those fears.

Zimmer Biomet's mymobility app provides patients with the information they need to prepare for and recover from surgery.

The app allows users to connect with Dr. Cafferky and his team through their iPhone® and Apple Watch® and receive support and guidance every step of the way, including:

  • Helpful reminders

  • Progress reports

  • Video exercises

The mymobility® app can help ensure that patients are better prepared for surgery and have the tools they need for a successful recovery.

ROSA®: Robotic Surgical Assistant

Robotic Surgical Assistant

When it comes to surgery, personalization is key. No two patients are alike, so why shouldn't your surgery be tailored specifically for you? That's where ROSA (Robotic Surgical Assistant) comes in.

Before surgery, ROSA creates a 3D model of your knee, allowing Dr. Cafferky to tailor the surgery to your unique anatomy.

During your procedure, the Robotic Surgical Assistant provides Dr. Cafferky with real-time data about your knee, allowing him to deliver an optimal implant fit and a more natural-feeling knee.

Finally, robotic surgery generally means smaller incisions and greater precision. Because of this, less bone and tissue are disturbed—meaning your recovery time is shortened.
